  • 1914José Alves Garcia, a Portuguese immigrant, arrives in Brazil.
  • 1929The Garcia Family founds the first company in Uberlândia (State of Minas Gerais): a rice processing mill. In the same year, Alexandrino Garcia, son of José Alves Garcia, marries Maria Silva Garcia, with whom he has three children: Walter (1930), Eleusa (1931) and Luiz Alberto (1935).
  • 1940Alexandrino Garcia joins other entrepreneurs with links to the political party UDN (National Democratic Union) to buy the newspaper Correio de Uberlândia, founded two years earlier.
  • 1941Alexandrino Garcia inaugurates the company Irmãos Garcia e Companhia Ltda.
  • 1949Walter Garcia, son of Alexandrino, founds Intermáquinas Ltda.
  • 1950Alexandrino Garcia establishes the company Garcia S.A. Indústria e Comércio (Garinco).
  • 1953Alexandrino Garcia, as the president of Commercial and Industrial Association of Uberlândia, leads a movement of entrepreneurs aimed to endow the city with better telecommunication services.
  • 1954Companhia de Telefones do Brasil Central (CTBC) is founded on February 15; in the following month, CTBC acquires Empresa Telefônica Teixeirinha.
  • 1958Alexandrino Garcia acquires the shareholding control of CTBC and starts its expansion program.
  • 1960CTBC launches the microwave telecom system, connecting the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília. The first phone call to Brasília is give from Uberlândia.
  • 1969Foundation of Gráfica Sabe (printing business), currently named Algar Mídia.
  • 1973Establishment of Sucotrisa Sucos e Conservas do Triângulo S.A. (fruit juices and preserves).
  • 1976Establishment of the company Brasil Central Táxi Aéreo (aerial taxi services). CTBC implements the codes for long distance and international calls (DDD and DDI), installs the first public pay phones, launches the microwave telecom route in the Triângulo Mineiro region, and launches the telephony service for rural areas.
  • 1977Foundation of Agropecuária Brasil Central S.A., which acquired the vegetable oil mill owned by Fujiwara Hisato, currently named Algar Agro. This company led to the formation of the acronym ABC, which composed the Group’s initials for over two decades.
  • 1979CTBC begins to serve a further 19 cities within its area of operations. In the same year, the Group acquires the tourist complex Pousada do Rio Quente (currently Rio Quente Resorts) in partnership with Francisco Hiczy.
  • 1982The ABC Group is officially incorporated, with the creation of the Holding Company.
  • 1983ABC Táxi Aéreo (currently Algar Aviation) is approved by Embraer (Brazilian Aeronautics Company) to perform the maintenance services of its airplanes.
  • 1984The first optical communication system in Brazil is implemented in Uberlândia.
  • 1985Inauguration of the first computerized telecom center in the countryside of Brazil.
  • 1986ABC Sabe (currently Algar Mídia) becomes the main shareholder of the newspaper Correio de Uberlândia.
  • 1987ABC A&P (currently Algar Agro) starts to invest in the pig farming segment.
  • 1988The Group reaches the mark of 64 companies and 13,500 associates. In the same year, CTBC installs the first optical cable in the city of Franca (State of São Paulo).
  • 1989The Group implements the Network Company management model.
  • 1990During this decade, the Group discontinues the operations in some segments, and restructures its businesses into four major sectors: Telecom, Agribusiness, Services and Entertainment.
  • 1991In homage to its founder, the Group is renamed Algar.
  • 1992CTBC launches the cellular telephony, even before the service was made available in most of the capital cities in Brazil.
  • 1993Activation of the fixed cellular telecom service for the rural areas, with the creation of the largest plant in the country and launching of card-operated public pay phones. Decease of the Algar Group’s founder, Alexandrino Garcia.
  • 1994Creation of CTBC Celular aimed to meet the fast-growing demand for cellular phones. Engeset extends its services to other regions and both CTBC and ABC Sabe (currently Algar Telecom and Algar Mídia respectively) start developing social projects in the field of education.
  • 1995ABC Construtora takes part in the construction and operation of the Integrated Public Transportation System in Uberlândia. Creation of Comtec. In the same year, card-operated public pay phones using cellular technology were installed inside of a bus in Uberlândia.
  • 1996Acquisition of Image TV, a cable TV operator. ABC Sabe (currently Algar Mídia) launches the program Correio na TV (Mail on TV) and publishes its content on the Internet; launching of NetSabe and availability of the directory on the Internet. Introduction of the digital cellular system.
  • 1997Laying of a fiber-optic network along the Brazilian federal highways that cross CTBC’s concession area.
  • 1998CTBC launches the pre-paid cellular phone service, a pioneer project in Brazil, which would later prevail in the Brazilian cellular telephony segment. In the same year, the company launched the CTBC Pre-Paid Cellular Kit. The Algar Consortium won the tender to operate the Bandwidth B (Banda B) of cellular telephony on Area 3, which comprises the States of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. Inauguration of Algar University. Creation of ACS, currently Algar Tecnologia.
  • 1999Creation of service access codes for long distance phone calls. CTBC’s code number is 12. CTBC launches the public pay phone for the hearing impaired people and installs the first elevated base station in the country.
  • 2000Foundation of Space, currently Algar Segurança (security firm). In the same year, the Garcia Family Bylaw is set up.
  • 2002Creation of the Algar Social Responsibility Institute.
  • 2003CTBC is authorized to expand the fixed telephony and data transmission services throughout the whole country.
  • 2004Algar Tecnologia inaugurates its contact center in the city of Campinas (State of São Paulo). Algar Telecom acquires an Internet provider in Ribeirão Preto (State of São Paulo) and starts offering Internet access services.
  • 2005Start-up construction of the soybean processing plant in the city of Porto Franco (State of Maranhão).
  • 2007ABC Inco (currently Algar Agro) starts crushing soybeans in the State of Maranhão and carries out the first bulk soybean export directly to Europe. CTBC obtains a 3G license to operate within its operating area. Engeset extends its operations to Rio de Janeiro and inaugurates branches in the States of Sergipe and Alagoas.
  • 2008Inauguration of the Algar Memory Center. Rio Quente Resorts inaugurates Praia do Cerrado. ABC Inco launches a new line of products named ABC de Minas, consisting of extra virgin olive oil, compound vegetable oil, tomato paste and tomato sauce.
  • 2009All the Group's companies start attaching the name Algar.
  • 2010Algar Tecnologia acquires the software firm Synos Technologies. Algar Telecom acquires Band H, the last frequency band (3G) available in the State of Minas Gerais, broadening its activities into complementary regions.
  • 2011Algar Agro starts the construction of a new vegetable oil refining and bottling plant in the State of Maranhão. Algar Aviation begins to represent Piaggio Aero in Brazil. Algar Telecom begins to expand Band H to 19 cities, with packages including fixed-line and cellular phone services, fixed and wireless broadband services and satellite pay TV services.
