Intangible Assets
Over more than five decades, Algar Telecom has enhanced distinct features that give it a prominent position in the market, strengthen its business and help the Company create value significantly. However, part of these distinct features cannot be measured in numbers and, therefore, are not explicitly shown in the Company’s financial statements. They are the so-called intangible assets, which mainly include:
Brand power – Algar Telecom owns the CTBC brand, the oldest phone company in Brazil, recognized for its top-quality services and client satisfaction rates since it was founded over five decades ago. It is a Brazilian capital company belonging to Grupo Algar, a holding company present in the IT/Telecom, Agribusiness, Services and Tourist industries. Established as one of the major phone companies in the Brazilian market, the Company was once more in Exame magazine’s ranking of the 100 Biggest and Best Companies in Brazil in 2011, as the most profitable company in the industry for the second straight year. Algar Telecom’s strong image in the market contributes to its close and lasting relationship with its different stakeholders.
Innovation – innovation is an integral part of Algar Telecom's growth strategy and has been in the Company’s DNA since its inception. It is permanently promoted in all processes – from the development and application of new technologies to the sustainability projects. Algar Telecom operates in the services industry, the market of which is largely dominated by major global players. However, its distinct features, which have always been cutting-edge technological and innovative services, strengthen its position. This policy has been better structured since an Innovation Committee was created in 2010. The results of this effort can be easily seen in the highlights of the Company’s Timeline and its large number of awards. In 2011, Algar Telecom was among the 100 most innovative IT companies in Brazil according to It Mídia. In addition, the Company filed its second patent application in the same year. It is for Repórter 3G, a product that allows streaming audio and video live through a notebook connected to the 3G Internet network.
Work climate – Algar Telecom believes that associates’ satisfaction in the workplace has a direct impact on any company’s results and sustainability. A good work climate is absolutely essential for a services company, especially if two of its pillars are its relationships and quality. In addition to an adequate infrastructure and a strong people management culture, the Company conducts an organizational climate survey annually to assess and measure associates’ perception of their work climate.
In 2011, 86% of the professionals responded to the survey, which covers communication, life quality, commitment and management model among other issues. Some of the findings were that 97% of the associates are committed to the goals and objectives of their Results Centers and 92% are willing to stop doing their tasks to give a client special attention, thus showing adherence to their Company’s values. The overall satisfaction rate stood at 70%. These data serve as a basis for the Human Talents department to improve Algar Telecom’s relationship with its associates.
Human and intellectual capital – Algar Telecom has professionals committed to service quality whose individual potentials are continuously maximized by the Human Talents department through training programs and tools that promote ongoing knowledge sharing. The main catalyst of the Company’s intellectual capital is UniAlgar, Grupo Algar’s corporate university. The institution, which focuses on developing entrepreneurial leadership, offers and coordinates several development and training courses both internally – in association with renowned institutions – and externally. In addition, it is also in charge of managing the knowledge created by the group companies.
