To Eternit, acting responsibly means mitigating any negative impacts while contributing to people’s social, economic and cultural development

In 2014, the Group invested R$910,400 in programs to engage local communities. GRI G4-SO1, G4-SO2

Since 2004, the Open Doors Program has welcomed more than 67,000 people, who have an opportunity to learn about the production process and to tour the facilities of the fiber-cement and mining units

One of Eternit’s most traditional actions is the Open Doors Program, which, since its creation in 2004, has welcomed over 67,000 people to tour the fiber-cement plants and mining operation. In 2014 alone, approximately 5,000 people participated in the initiative, which promotes a better understanding among the public of the mining and processing of chrysotile asbestos, the sustainable production of fiber-cement products and the workplace health and safety practices adopted by SAMA and the production units of Eternit and Precon Goiás.

During the year, the Company also continued its various social actions: Assis Chateaubriand São Paulo Art Museum (MASP) for the conservation of its collection of rare works and books; promoting cultural inclusion at the Olga Kos Institute for children and young people with Down’s Syndrome; São Paulo Biennal art exhibitions; International Dance Festival in Goiás (Dançarte); Goals for Life Concerts (instrumental music); and Ayrton Senna Racing Day.

Meanwhile, SAMA, among other social and cultural initiatives, conducts the Sambaíba Project in Minaçu, Goiás, which works to promote the inclusion of youth at social risk in the labor market. The Company encourages the production of handicrafts made from waste rock extracted from the mine, recycled paper and banana tree fiber. Since 2004, the program provides vocational training to youth in partnership with the National Industrial Training Service (Senai). GRI G4-SO1

Intangible assets

Over its history stretching back over 70 years, Eternit has built a solid image in the market and a highly competitive structure. The highlights in this area are described below:

Intellectual property

The Company’s employees are trained and encouraged to be protagonists in their own career advancement. In addition to developing its people, the Company offers a wide range of benefits, monitors organizational climate through surveys and develops action plans to attract and retain talent. These differentials result in low employee turnover and high internal recruiting and, in 2014, led the Company to be included, for the third straight year, in the ranking of Best Companies to Work For published by the magazine Você S/A.

Strength of the brand

Product quality, transparency, good relations with stakeholders and credibility are some of the attributes that strengthen and consolidate the Eternit brand in Brazil, whose mascot, an Owl, conveys the concepts of wisdom, safety and protection.

Good cost-benefit tradeoff

Fiber-cement made with chrysotile offers an excellent cost-benefit tradeoff. The roofing segment is one of the largest markets in Brazil’s construction industry, and fiber-cement roofing panels and concrete roofing tiles generate annual demand of over 300 million square meters, which represents around 50% of the national roofing market. Eternit’s products are leaders in the fiber-cement segment and combine quality and durability at affordable prices, which favors their acquisition by income classes with lower purchasing power.

Diversification

The Company has the most diversified product mix in the segment. Learn more about Eternit’s portfolio in the chapter Profile.

New technologies

In 2014, Eternit completed the implementation of its Integrated Human Resources Management System based on the software YourLife. The system, which is constantly updated, integrates all area processes, from registering employees’ professional information to planning their careers. GRI G4-13

Throughout 2014, the companies that form the Eternit Group received important awards and recognition from organizations and publications in the areas of corporate governance, investor relations, human resources, marketing and products.
