ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
In 2011, the Company continued investing in the optimization of practices that contribute to the sustainability of the business and society. Santos Brasil was the first company in the port sector to integrate the Companies for the Climate Platform of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation. The project offers technical and scientific support for organizations interested in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its operations and products, stimulating a low carbon economy and concern for climate change. The group runs discussion forums on global warming that generate ideas for actions that may be adopted to contribute to conscious consumption and the reduction of gas emissions.
The dissemination of information with the aim of mobilizing employees and making them aware of the importance of the topic is also part of this positioning. One highlight in this respect was the "My Environment" campaign held at all to its business units, which involved more than three thousand employees.
Based on five central topics – Water, Power, Recycling, Global Warming and Conscious Consumption – information was made available on an in-house hot site created especially for the campaign. In addition to obtaining information on the subject, the employees could make suggestions and give tips on preserving the environment both at home and at work.
All contributions were read and analyzed and at the end of the campaign the best initiatives were acknowledged. Some of them were: replacing gasoline with ethanol in the light vehicles fleet at Tecon Santos and Santos Brasil Logística, the adoption of drinking mugs instead of disposable cups and the setting up of the Corporate Ride Program which, based on the Intelligent Ride website, crosses information to form ride-sharing groups, reducing the circulation of automobiles on the streets.
For 2012, Santos Brasil is studying the development of an environmental education project to be developed in all its units, and therefore intends to obtain assistance from a specialized consulting firm.
EMISSIONS
Santos Brasil has managed to reduce the rate of CO2 emitted per container moved (2010 vs. 2009) at Tecon Santos by 13.63% This result was highlighted by the GGE (Greenhouse Gas Emissions Emission Inventory carried out in 2011 in reference to 2010 operations at the Company's main terminal. According to the report, CO2 emissions totaled 17,932 tons in 2010, the equivalent to handling 1.351 million TEU.The inventory was carried out based on the standard unit of measure of the impact of emissions on the planet's climate, in which all greenhouse effect gases emitted are transformed into equivalent CO2. The index used in the analysis takes into account the activity performed by the Company: equivalent CO2 emissions per TEU handled (unit referring to a 20-ft. container).
Among the measures that have contributed to the reduction in emissions, the increased use of RTG, equipment that handles containers in the yards in replacement of Stackers stands out. Another favorable point was the acquisition of a new truck fleet for land-based container shipping. Although the number of vehicles has increased from 95 to 111 in 2010, a 6.37% reduction in the number of emissions was registered in comparison with 2009.
The mapping of GEE emissions has been carried out since 2007 at Tecon Santos and has included the logistics unit since 2008. This year a group of employees acquired know-how to run a survey of inventory information that will be carried out by an in-house team at Santos Brasil as from 2012.

By performing the inventory, the Company searches for subsidies to adopt initiatives that are already under study to reduce environmental impacts. Amongst these, the revision of the electric matrix (composed mainly of diesel oil and electricity at Tecon Santos), the electrification of diesel equipment such as the RTG, the installation of presence sensors and faucet flow regulators, ecological flushes and the reutilization of waste on workshop washing ramps are part of the effort to reduce power and water consumption.
In 2011, such an action was the substitution of gasoline with ethanol, which practically reduces CO2 emissions to zero in the light vehicles fleet at Tecon Santos and in some of the units of Santos Brasil Logística. The idea, suggested by an employee during the Environment Week, included all the 58 vehicles used to move the teams around, to do inspections, to handle materials and for other in-house services at Tecon Santos and at the four logistics units (CLIA at Santos and Guarujá and the São Bernardo do Campo and Jaguaré DC).
IMPACTS & WASTE
At Santos Brasil, the waste disposal process follows the valid environmental legislation with regard the transportation, handling and disposal methods. The Company has adopted selective waste collection, which has recycled 90% of the waste generated at all business units for the last 11 years. In 2011, 41.7 tons of paper and plastic were recycled, an 8.3% reduction in relation to the total amount recycled in 2010. This performance is the result of the awareness promoted throughout the year, which emphasized the importance of reducing the waste generated.
All units have labeled selective wastebaskets and a company specializing in recycling collects the garbage and informs the percentage recyclable use of what is collected. Based on this information, Santos Brasil measures the employees' commitment not to contaminate garbage that may be recycled – selective collection is part of the common corporate goals.
Santos Brasil has also worked in partnership with its suppliers to implement initiatives that abide by the National Policy of Solid Waste (PNRS), which will enter into force in the country starting in the second half of 2012. All batteries and tires used in the Company's operations are collected by the manufacturers as stipulated by law and allocated for recycling. The next step is to extend this work to light bulbs and lubricant oil packaging.

Throughout the year, no significant spillage was recorded at the Company terminals except for minor leakages of oil from machinery (between 20 and 80 liters) in the Tecon Santos yard, which did not cause any environmental damage. All oil spilt was collected up and adequately disposed of.
POWER
From a renewable and indirect source (hydroelectric), the power consumed by Santos Brasil is purchased from distribution companies. In 2011, the electrical power consumption at Tecon Santos totaled 31,200 MWh, with monthly average of 2,600 MWh.
