annual report 2011
R$ 1 million
was the total amount invested in social actions in 2011.
The Company's social projects consist of initiatives on several fronts targeting employees and the community.

SOCIAL PERFORMANCE

To consolidate the relationship with the communities surrounding its facilities and contribute to the sustainable development of these locations. Based on this positioning, Santos Brasil develops and supports social inclusion projects focusing on education, the promotion of citizenship and the human development of its employees and society. In 2011, more than R$1 million was invested in the implementation of these initiatives, which benefited approximately 6,000 individuals.

SANTOS BRASIL FORMARE SCHOOL

Training citizens, acting as transformation agents in the life of the community and its employees, developing skills and stimulating voluntary work. These are some of the concepts disseminated by the Santos Brasil Formare School, an initiative developed since 2009 in partnership with the Iochpe Foundation.

Through Formare, Santos Brasil offers vocational courses to senior year public high school students, supporting them in the full development of their potential and in obtaining their first job. In addition to uniforms and food, the students also receive a grant equivalent to half a minimum wage.

The Formare Courses – Logistics Operations Assistant and Port Terminal Operations Assistant – are certified by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and prepare the youths to work in a promising area that is responsible for 90% of Brazilian foreign trade.

The other differential factor is that classes are held in the Company by employees known as voluntary educators who act as agents of social transformation by sharing their professional know-how with the students. To act as volunteers, employees receive training from the Iochpe Foundation.

In 2011, 38 youths graduated from the two classes of the program, with a group of more than 100 voluntary educators, committed to sharing their knowledge with its participants. During the year, the participants were also given psychological support, which helps students in their personal development process.

Of the 97 youths already trained by the program, 45% are part of the Santos Brasil staff. In addition, the remainders are employed and most continue their studies at vocational/technical courses and faculties in the region.

With Formare, Santos Brasil profissionalizes youths from public schools.

READING CLUB

To develop the students' habit of reading, improve their vocabulary and essay-writing skills, a Reading Club was formed in the Operations Assistant course in the Terminal Port of the Santos Brasil Formare College. In weekly classes given by employee volunteers, the works of major Brazilian literature authors are discussed.

In addition to exercising reading and vocabulary for other course subjects, the initiative also prepares students for the National High School Exam ENEM and for the Vestibular exam since many of the works are listed as mandatory reading for these exams.

Committed to creating a library in the terminal, the students have already gathered more than 60 copies of different authors such as Castro Alves and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. The objective is to use these books to set up a collection that will be used by these and future students.

PASTORAL DA CRIANÇA

For the past four years Santos Brasil has maintained a partnership with Pastoral da Criança, a social action organization of the CNBB (National Conference of Bishops of Brazil) that focuses on the integral development of underprivileged children.

The monthly sponsorship by the Company enables more than 1,200 children to be seen by a team of 120 volunteers who help in tasks focused on their integral development and on combating infant malnutrition – actions such as a monthly weighing and the raising of awareness regarding the appropriate use of foodstuffs, hygiene and citizenship.

To ensure the implementation of the activities proposed in comfort and safety, Santos Brasil maintains a home adapted to the needs of the Pastoral and in accordance with legal requirements in Vicente de Carvalho, Guarujá (SP).

NA MÃO CERTA ("IN THE RIGHT HAND") PROGRAM

Since 2009, Santos Brasil has been a signatory of the Na Mão Certa Program, an initiative of Childhood Brasil that strives to mobilize governments, companies and third-sector organizations to focus more effectively on confronting the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents on Brazilian highways.

The program, which was started at Santos Brasil Logística, was extended to Tecon Santos in 2011, enabling a wider public to be reached and a more effective involvement of employees, outsourcers and truck drivers who are in contact with the Company in some way.

Taking advantage of the commemorations for National Truck Driver's Day, on June 30, an awareness week against the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents was held. The action involved the distribution of pamphlets with guidance on helping children and adolescents at risk, preparing truck drivers to act as protective agents, in addition to materials such as cleaning cloths and litter bags for vehicles with awareness messages. More than two thousand truck drivers who provide services to Santos Brasil were involved in this initiative, which was held at the São Bernardo do Campo and Jaguaré Distribution Centers (DC) in São Paulo, the Guarujá and Santos CLIAs and at Tecon Santos.

Internally, the Company also promotes its employees' awareness. Several actions were implemented in 2011, such as:

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

In July 2011, in partnership with the NGO Partners in Education and with the Guarujá City Council, Santos Brasil initiated activities on the Parceiros da Educação project – a measure aimed at raising the quality of education in the region's public schools, based on the qualification of teachers, investments in infrastructure and greater integration with the community.

The program, a first in the Baixada Santista, brought the Lúcia Flora School, at Vicente de Carvalho, over 240 volunteers – including Santos Brasil employees, Formare alumni and members of the community. They participated in the work party organized to paint the school's walls. This action was aimed at mobilizing the community in the surrounding area to learn about and take part in the project. A contract team completed the reform.

In the second stage, the classrooms were painted and the schoolyard, restrooms and canteen were renovated. The improvements to the school facilities relied on the help of teachers, parents, students, groups and entities involved with the community, beside the Santos Brasil volunteers.

The continued training course meetings offered to teachers are held in the evenings on weekdays and once a month on Saturdays. Participation in these activities is spontaneous but has attracted an expressive number of interested people: 78 teachers.

Santos Brasil's participation in the Parceiros da Educação Project is a five-year project. In 2012, the training course will be reinforced with the aim of eradicating Portuguese and Math illiteracy. Another important point is the greater involvement of both the community and employees in voluntary activities focused on schools.

THE PORT OF SANTOS AND THE HISTORY OF BRAZIL

The project, whose centerpiece is an interactive DVD with a documentary on the history of the Port of Santos, is aimed at reviving the importance of one of the country's greatest centers of development, for the latest and future generations. The year of 2011 saw the second phase of the workshops involving public school teachers in the Baixada Santista, resulting in the participation of over 500 people. The purpose of the meetings was to present the relevance of the material in the academic curriculum, showing how it can be used as a tool for teaching and learning in various disciplines, such as Geography, History and Portuguese Language.

PORTAS ABERTAS ("OPEN DOOR PROGRAM")
Through the Open Door Program, the families of employees can visit the Company's facilities, strengthening the bond between Santos Brasil and this public. Held over the past ten years, in 2011 the initiative was visited by 137 families, totaling 538 individuals, including children, youths and adults.

QUALITY OF LIFE
The concern for the employees' quality of life and personal well-being is also part of Santos Brasil's positioning: the Company promotes and encourages its team to participate in sporting activities.

The Company supports the holding of in-house tournaments, which had the participation of 684 employees in the following sports: indoor soccer (500), volleyball (160) and beach footvolley (24) in 2011. Throughout the year, the activities included all the units located in the State of São Paulo and, in 2012, they will be extended to Vila do Conde (PA) and Imbituba (SC). In addition to sports, the In-house Solidarity Soccer Championship stands out due to its social character: at the end of the tournament, all the participating teams donate basic staples baskets to social welfare entities in the cities of Santos and Guarujá.

The sponsorship reinforce the value of Santos Brasil brand.

684 EMPLOYEES

Santos Brasil also has two indoor soccer courts for matches held always on Saturdays in Santos and Guarujá, and which in 2011 enjoyed an average participation of 40 employees each. In 2012, these activities will be extended to the towns of São Vicente (SP), São Bernardo do Campo (SP), Barcarena (near Tecon Vila do Conde/PA) and Imbituba (SC).

In addition to in-house activities, the Company also encourages employee participation in external trials and competitions. In the soccer competitions promoted by SEST/SENAT (Road Union Cup – Copa Sindicato dos Rodoviários, Copa Sesc, Futsal SEST/SENAT, etc.) Santos Brasil was represented by four teams of 15 employees each.

With 45 participants, the pedestrianism team receives support to train and take part in major races held across the State of São Paulo such as the São Silvestre, Adidas Station Circuit and São Paulo International Marathon and Half-Marathons. In the traditional 10 km Tribuna FM race held in Santos (SP), registration was at a record level: more than 557 athletes from the Company formed the largest group in the event, which had a total of 15,000 participants. Santos Brasil finances part of the price of the enrolment fee, offers uniforms, support tents and at the end of the race the participants are welcomed with a massage.

SANTOS BRASIL TENNIS OPEN

In 2011, Santos Brasil brought one of the rounds of the Tennis Challenger Series to Santos. The competition attracted Brazilian and foreign athletes aiming for points for the international ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) circuit ranking.

In addition to reinforcing disclosure of the brand, the initiative is a social investment that also seeks the quality of life of its employees and the community in familiarizing itself more with this sport. The 40 students of the Formare project were also invited to attend the matches.

Support for the event, made possible under the Sports Incentive Law made Santos once again the scenario of major competitions in this modality. In 2012, a round of the ATP Challenger Series Santos Brasil Tennis Open will be held once again in the city with sponsorship by Santos Brasil.
