ANNUAL REPORT 2013

An active participant in its local communities, Eternit supports the social, economic and cultural development of these regions through social initiatives. In 2013, the Company invested R$3.4 million to benefit society, with this amount in line with the previous year due to the lower net income in the period. The Open Doors Program (see chart) and the Sambaíba Project are sponsored in full by Eternit and its subsidiaries.

The Sambaíba Project helps underprivileged youth in Minaçu, Goiás to enter the job market by encouraging the production of handicrafts made from waste rocks extracted from the mine, recycled paper and banana tree fiber. The initiative is carried out in partnership with the National Industrial Training Service (Senai) and has been promoted by SAMA since 2004. The pursuit of sustainability is a permanent concern of the mining company, which organizes various actions to minimize the impacts of its activities. These include the creation of a cooperative of craftsmen, valuing local culture and sponsoring local athletes and events. Some of the social projects supported by Eternit and its subsidiaries in the communities where they operate are described below:

1) Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind: project involving the publication and distribution of the institution’s books in Braille and in audio formats for libraries and schools located in several cities across Brazil.

2) São Paulo Museum of Art Assis Chateaubriand (MASP): project involving the conservation of the museum’s 7,800 works of art and 60,000 rare books on the history of art.

3) Cultural Inclusion Project – Olga Kos Institute: this project provides opportunities for cultural inclusion through art to children and youth with Downs Syndrome.

4) Bienal de São Paulo: contemporary art exhibition that showcases some 100 artists from Brazil and abroad.

Open Doors Program

Conducted since November 2004, the mission of the Open Doors Program is to help society better understand chrysotile mining and processing activities, the sustainable manufacturing of fiber-cement products, and the health and safety practices adopted in the industry. The initiative is coordinated by the mining company SAMA and the Eternit and Precon plants. Since its launch, the Program, which is considered one of the largest in the market, has received over 62,000 visitors. To schedule a visit, find the plant nearest you on Eternit’s website (www.eternit.com.br).
