Sustainability Report 2015

Walmart has around 1,000 private label products, created through business partnerships and sold exclusively in the company's chain at average prices that are 10% to 30% lower than similar products.

Walmart Brasil encourages and advises its private labels suppliers to obtain the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certification in order to increase food safety, guarantee protection and strengthen consumer safety. This is a food safety standard that increases transparency and brings greater cost efficiency in the whole food supply chain.

In 2014, the portfolio was expanded with the launch of 189 products. Of these, 7.9% had differentials in terms of sustainability, exceeding the initial goal that 5% should have this feature. We would highlight among the other launches:

Step by step development of private labels

The suppliers take part in a bid in which they present the technical information and positioning of the brand, the market benchmarks and the definitions of the product, including the requirements in terms of sustainability. The companies regarded as ready to carry out commercial, technical and sustainable projects are identified in this stage.
This is applied to all suppliers and assesses the potential of the development of products with differentials in terms of sustainability. The following pillars are evaluated in this stage: waste and recycling, packaging, raw materials and ingredients, consumption of energy, water and fuel, logistics, people and communities.
Suppliers of merchandise and perishable goods are audited under international criteria and directives with the aim of obtaining the certification of their production units (companies) in one of the protocols recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Suppliers of non-food products are audited under internal criteria aimed at assessing the requirements related to quality, safety and conformance of the company (structure) and the products, according to the internal and legal requirements. All the audits are undertaken by reputable internationally recognized outsourced companies.
This register brings together information such as the origin of the raw materials, composition, details of the technical specifications and all the definitions related to conformance with the quality, safety and legal demands for the product.
Laboratory analysis may be carried out, in line with the critical nature of the product, within the framework of identity and quality, whether established by the legislation and/or prevailing specific standards, or by specifications defined between Walmart and the suppliers. All these analyses are carried out by recognized and reputable outsourced laboratories. Tests and sensory analysis are also undertaken internally.
The packaging of products under development is submitted to evaluation by an outsourced company that specializes in regulatory analysis. This is to ensure that all the products and their texts which must appear on the packaging conform to the prevailing legislation and standards.
