To discourage the use of plastic bags, Walmart offers customers a series of options, including a reusable bag, more than 483,000 of which were acquired by customers in 2014. Another action by Walmart is the Cliente Consciente Merece Desconto (Conscientious Consumers Deserve a Discount) program. Every consumer who does not use a plastic bag in his/her purchases gets a discount of R$ 0.03 for every five items acquired. Discounts of around R$ 1.28 million had been granted since the program was launched until December 2014. This is equivalent to more than 42.6 million plastic bags not being used.

To raise customer awareness of the issue, the company created and made available for download a leaflet called Sacolinhas, e eu com isso? (Plastic bags, why should I care?). This publication has a wealth of content on the issue and covers various aspects such as the implications of uninformed consumption, the alternatives that can dispense with their use, the life cycle of plastic and its possible destinations for its disposal.
